My grandfather used to consume a lot of khilang, which brings back fond memories. He lived for 105 years. The elderly didn't drink other kinds of tea. My grandfather used to drink khilang both in the morning and at night after eating. He used to consume about 2 liters of khilang in a Hatikhujia baati (bowl), the size of an elephant foot. I used to accompany him while he sipped tea. He liked homemade jaggery with his khilang drink. I used to eat jaggery while he drank his tea. This was a pleasant flashback to the past. We didn't start out with a tea plantation. It happened from 1990-1991 during Operation Bajrang. We were rather young at the time. It was also the first time a few households in our area started tea gardens. At the time, my neighborhood lacked a tea garden. We couldn't go anywhere since we were young and would be considered suspects if we did. We were unable to leave due to the adoption of the President's order. We had a large vacant yard not far from my house. As a result of limited mobility and the fact that others were growing tea nearby, I decided that I should establish a tea garden to make ends meet. For the tea plantation, I gathered some bamboo from my yard and the area around my village. I started my tea garden with the assistance of two old tea workers, one of whom was called Nana. With careful planning, we planted tea seeds. As a result, the tea plants began to develop, and with other relevant tasks on the schedule, I somehow managed to establish a 4-bigha tea garden without buying any tea plants. I used the seeds from the old tea trees available in our area. And with time, the plantation area developed into a beautiful tea garden. It took me around four years to develop that tea garden. At that time, no one in our community knew about urea or other modern synthetic compounds. Although the town was nearby, none of the villagers ever brought or applied such chemicals to the soil or plants. We used to produce crops sustainably using local resources and organic manures. I started manufacturing tea from my plantation in 2015, despite having established my tea garden in 1990-1991. I first started preparing green tea. We did not prepare Khilang at the time since it was not intended for commercial use. We consumed it locally for its therapeutic benefits. We drank it on occasion, and our elderly drank it daily because it was drunk by our forefathers and is an ancient traditional drink. But it was never meant to be sold. We used to drink Khilang to cure illnesses like fever, stomach aches, flu, and so on while we were unwell. It is the first time that we've exclusively shared Khilang with those outside our community through Oiirabot. Our family is a joint family, and we take care of the entire manufacturing process together. For preparing tea, we do not need extra help, we prepare handmade tea together as a family.
