Artisan Moiti
Moiti means the amalgamation of my parents' names, Moina and Pragati, There’s one more meaning, which is "Moi Saah" in Assamese, meaning, "I am Tea."
My grandfather used to work at the Tara Tea estate in Doom Dooma, under Warren Tea Co. We used to mainly drink red tea, not milk tea, but orthodox red tea. We used to get it from multiple tea factories. Mostly, we used to drink red tea without sugar.
We planted our tea garden in 1996. It was my father who took voluntary retirement and moved back here. Someone asked if he would like to buy the tea estate. He bought it as an investment but not for business purposes. It was only after Papa passed away that this tea plantation became a family business. Prior to that, Papa used to be involved in multiple businesses. The tea garden was like a side business. It was after he passed away that we, as a family, invested more time in tea than in other businesses. And my mom got fully involved in it. It was from 2011 onwards that we were fully involved in it. Initially, we didn’t manufacture tea. It was only from 2018 onwards that we started manufacturing tea. The first tea we made was green tea and red orthodox tea.
We went organic in 2015. We converted to organic before we started manufacturing tea. It was from the time when the revolution started in Assam to go organic. My mom started to do something different. Being in the tea business, we know how harmful the use of chemicals in tea can be. We knew we couldn’t drink chemical tea directly; it should be cleaned and washed. For that, even the betterment of soil, we went organic. It’s not easy for small tea growers; there’s no one to guide us or back us up.
When we got into production, we didn’t know that marketing was a little different. We have to push to sell the tea. It wasn’t like CTC or orthodox that anybody would drink the tea. We had to bring in the revolution. People are getting more conscious about health; they like the taste of it. Green tea is something that, with time, you get used to it. The first time you find the taste different, the second time the taste is different, but as you continue drinking it, you start to like it. So it was due to a lack of marketing skills that we couldn’t push the product as much as we had thought. We couldn’t do it. This was the drawback we faced.
We didn’t face any issue selling orthodox tea but green tea it’s difficult. People want to reduce the price which doesn’t cover the cost of production and effort. Green tea production is difficult. It changes according to weather conditions. If it is too hot, then the taste of tea made in bright sunny day would differ from the green tea manufactured in a rainy day, then the tea made in a very humid condition. Everytime we make the tea changes, due to weather and seasonal change.
My mother is fully involves in the process of making tea and myself and my brother are partially involved.
when it comes to green tea, no one really knows much. Everyone finds the taste different, it differes from person to person. Some find it sweet, others find the smoky flavour, someone says it’s just mild pale. So it’s depend upon everyone’s tongue palate.
When it comes to hygiene factory, we don’t let anyone enter the processing area with shoes or slippers. We do not take too many staff for processing the tea. Mostly it’s the family people, and 2-3 staff members. To sum up, the beginning of Moiti’s tea journey started with how to keep the soil and plants healthy before even the idea of tea manufacturing was decided. We’ve received really good feedbacks from people who tried our green tea. But I always feel that we have the scope of improving it further.
